Homework

Reading- children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes, 5 times a week from their home reading book and this should be recorded in their reading diary (date, name of book, page number) and signed by an adult. The number of reads will be counted up each Friday so children must ensure that they have their reading diary and their book with them (along with a 100 read book if they have one of these too).

Spelling Shed- children are expected to complete tasks set by the class teacher each week. These will be set each Monday and completed by the following Monday.

NumBots- children are expected to engage with this online platform on a weekly basis.

27th January 2023

In English, the children have been introduced to a new book called ‘Bob, Man on the Moon’. The children wrote questions to Bob to help them know more about him. They then progressed onto writing a persuasive letter to entice people to visit the moon. Year 1 focussed on saying their sentence out loud before writing it and Year 2 had to include when and that in their writing. In Year 1 Maths, adding and subtracting 2 to a number and being able to identify whether the answer will be an odd or even number. They then progressed onto doubling and halving and using this as a strategy to work out ‘near double’ problem. In Year 2 Maths, the children have started multiplication. The children wrote repeated addition number sentences alongside equal groups of objects. They then used this to use the multiplication sign (x) to write multiplication sentences. The children learnt that, for example, 3 x 5 means 3 groups of 5. Year 2 then made arrays to help them work out multiplication problems.

In Science, the children have started their new topic of ‘Materials’. The children learnt what a material is. They went round the school and identified materials such as wood, plastic, glass, stone, brick, cardboard etc. They then progressed onto learning about the properties these materials have. The children learnt that materials are picked to make certain objects based on their properties. In History, the children have started their new topic of ‘Changes Within Living Memory’. The children learnt about the history of transport and ordered these on a timeline. They then learnt about the history of the railway and cars. They have compared how these are similar and different to modern day modes of transport. In Computing, have started their topic of ‘Stop Motion’. They children have been using stop motion software to move objects across the screen. They did this using a feature called ‘onion skinning’.

Here is what we have been up to!

Friday 2nd December

In English, the children have been writing a character description of the witch in our story ‘Rapunzel’. They children had to think of appropriate adjectives to describe her. Year 1 focused on writing sentences with capital letters and full stops. Year 2 had to include ‘when’ and ‘if’ into their writing. The children then progressed onto having a class debate. They had to discuss ‘Should the King help Rapunzel?’ They thought of some great ideas ready for writing a discussion report.

In Year 1 Maths, the children have been using whole part models to make numbers 6 to 9 in different ways. The children then progressed onto learning how to find the missing parts. The children used counters to help them.

In Year 2 Maths, the children have been learning to add and subtract ones to and from a 2-digit number. The children then progressed onto adding and subtracting ten to a 2-digit number. They used dienes to help them with this. Year 2 then moved onto applying this to money and solving word problems.

In Science, the children have continued with the topic, ‘Animals including Humans’. They have been learning about the different food groups and the position of these on the food pyramid. The children learnt that the food that was at the bottom meant that we need to eat a lot of these and as we get higher up the pyramid, we need to eat small amounts of these.

In DT, the children have been making 'Moving Monsters' using pivots with paper fasteners and card. The children used their designs to help put them together and evaluated what worked well and what they could change if they were to make them again.

In Music, the children watched a video of 'Peter and the Wolf' and listened to the music. They identified the different instruments that were used for the seven characters by holding up a card every time they 'heard' that character. The children used this to retell the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’.

Friday 18th November

In English, the children have continued their learning alongside ‘Rapunzel’. The children have been writing a setting description about the tower Rapunzel lives in. They children thought of different adjectives and then used these in their setting descriptions. The children have then progressed onto writing a letter to the King in the role of Rapunzel to ask for his help. The Year 1 children wrote simple sentences and Year 2 focused on including ‘when’ and ‘that’.

In Year 1 Maths, the children have been learning about ordinal numbers and using this to explain the order of objects and also people in a line. The children then progressed onto using ‘part-whole models’ to help them make 5 in different ways.

In Year 2 Maths, the children have been adding 1-digit’ numbers together. They have done this through ‘bridging 10’. For example, in 9 + 5 =, the children took 1 from the 5 to change to a 10 and then added on the remaining 4. The children used tens frames and counters to help them with this. They then progressed onto subtraction.

In Science, the children have continued with the topic, ‘Animals including Humans’. The children had to investigate ‘Do you get faster as you get older?’. The children thought of 5 different activities that the children could do from Donaldson Class. These same activities were then also completed by children from Zephaniah Class. The children discussed their results after a very exciting lesson!

In Geography, the children have been learning about the human and physical features of their own settlement of St.Neots. The children have then progressed onto drawing a map of St.Neots. They used their walk to St.Neots Library and photos to help them do this. They then added map symbols onto their maps.

In History, the children have been learning about the ‘siege equipment’ that were used to defend and protect a castle. The children then had to decide which siege equipment would have been most appropriate for each castle and why.

Friday 4th November

In English, the children have been introduced to their new book ‘Rapunzel’ by Bethan Woollvin. The children had to make predictions about how Rapunzel could break free from the tower. Year 1 drew three pictures based on their ideas and used these to write simple sentences. Year 2 wrote down key vocabulary first to help inspire their sentences, making sure that they used ‘when’ in their writing.

In Year 1 Maths, the children have been learning about ‘whole’ objects and ‘not whole objects’. They used pictures of carrots to understand that the ‘whole’ means that we have all of the object. They progressed onto learning about whole groups of objects which meant that no objects were missing within the group. They used concrete resources to help them with this.

In Year 2 Maths, the children have been using their knowledge of number bonds to 10 to make 100. They used bar models to help represent the different parts to make the whole number. The children then progressed onto writing subtraction number sentences.

In Science, the children have continued with the topic, ‘Animals including Humans’. The children have been learning about the different life stages of a human. These included baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult and elderly. The children learnt about the differences between each stage.

In Geography, the children have learnt about human and physical features and provided examples of these. They children thought about their own settlement of St.Neots and discussed the human and physical features there are.

In Year 1 Computing lessons, the children have been learning how to log onto a computer and using their mouse skills to create shapes on ‘sketchpad’. The children practised making the shapes bigger and smaller. In Year 2 Computing, the children have been on a ‘technology safari’ around the school to identify the different technology. They to identify if they had wires, batteries, buttons or a screen.

Friday 14th October 2022

In English, the children have continued with their learning alongside ‘The Jolly Postman’. The children drew a map to show someone the journey to the gingerbread cottage. They then wrote instructions to tell someone how to get there. They included imperative verbs and Year 2 also included adverbs. The children then progressed onto drawing a fantastic, new broom for a witch which were labelled with expanded noun phrases. Year 1 focused on segmenting nouns around their picture.

In Year 1 Maths, the children have been comparing height and had to make sure they were using the correct vocabulary of ‘shorter’ and ‘taller’. They then moved onto comparing weight.

In Year 2 Maths, the children have been learning how to partition a 2-digit number in different ways. They used part-whole models to help them with this. Year 2 then progressed onto ordering numbers in ascending and descending order.

In Science, the children have continued with the topic, ‘Animals including Humans’. The children have been learning about the life cycle of a caterpillar and a frog. They were introduced to the word ‘metamorphosis’ and used the life cycle of these animals to help them understand what this meant.

In History, the children have learnt about the jobs that different people had within a castle and how these differed from the jobs we have today. The children then learnt about the social hierarchy in the castle and learnt who was deemed to be the most important and who wasn’t.

In Art, the children replicated a piece of Art by Jasper Jones, which was called ‘Numbers in Colour (1974)’. They used primary colours to paint onto and around the numbers, ensuring that they kept the shape of the numbers. They then mixed the primary colours to add to this.

Friday 30th September 2022

In English, the children have continued with their learning alongside ‘The Jolly Postman’. The children have discussed whether Baby Bear should forgive Goldilocks or not. They thought about reasons ‘for’ and ‘against’. From this, the children wrote a discussion report. Year 1 focused on writing simple sentences and Year 2 focused on including ‘because’ in their writing to explain why.

In Year 1 Maths, the children have been learning about one less and one more of numbers within 10. The children then delved into challenges within this to progress their learning.

In Year 2 Maths, the children have been learning about the place value of 2-digit numbers. They have used place value charts to partition a number into tens and ones and wrote number sentences to match these.

In Science, the children started their topic, ‘Animals including Humans’. The children were introduced to the different classifications of animals. The children then discussed the animals they knew and put these into an animal classification based on their knowledge of that animal.

In History, the children have learnt about the three different types of castles; Motte and Bailey, Stone Keep and Concentric. The children then learnt about the different features within these castles and that a lot of them were used as a way of protecting the castle.

In Geography, the children have been learning about the population of the world. They have then learnt about what a village, town and city is and the differences between them.

Year 2 Remote Learning Timetable 6th/7th/8th January

Year 1 Remote Learning Timetable 6th/7th/8th January

Week Beginning 30/11/20

What a busy week we have had in class 2!

In English, the children have had a discussion about whether they should ask the polar bear to stay or go and then they have designed a raft to help him to get home.

In maths, the children have been using mental calculation strategies to solve addition and subtraction number sentences. They are getting very quick at working things out in their head.

In science, the children looked carefully at the life cycle of a butterfly and what happens at each stage.

In outdoor learning, the children created symmetrical Christmas trees using outdoor resources. They also made 2D shapes out of string.

The children have been busy practising for Whoops-A-Daisy. Thank you for helping with lines. Please could we have a white t-shirt in school for Monday so we can start to record parts.

Week Beginning 23/11/20

Class 2 have had a very busy week. We have been completing assessments and I have been very proud of how hard all the children have worked.

The children have also worked with class 1 to create Christmas decorations for the school. They are very excited to see the decorations up.

If your child would like to make a decoration for the competition, please can you bring it to school on Tuesday 1st December? Please don't forget to put their name on it.

Week Beginning 16/11/20

What a busy week we have! In English we have continued with our book, 'Leaf.' We have written noun phrases about the polar bear and then written these up in a character description. I have been very impressed with the children's writing.

In maths we have focussed on written methods for addition and subtraction. We have looked at counting forwards and backwards on a number line and using our number bonds to 10 to help us to work out the answer.

In science we looked at animals and their offspring. We thought about how animals and their babies look similar and how some look very different.

In topic we have used the laptops to practise our word processing skills. We wrote facts about castles whilst learning how to use word. We were able to change the letters so they are capital, put a space in between our words and use the spell checker to check our words. We also did an art lesson this week where we used Lego bricks for printing and created a castle picture.

Outside learning this week has involved creating foxes out of sticks in a team, leaf rubbings and building a boat that floated. We have had great fun working together and learning from each other.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Week Beginning 9/11/20

We have had a busy week in class 2. In English we have started to look at our new book, 'Leaf.' We have written a report about polar bears and the children have become very knowledgeable on this subject. I have been very impressed with their writing.

In maths we have been looking at addition and subtraction. The children have built up their fluency in this area and are getting pretty quick.

In science, we looked at the 3 basic needs of an animal. We have also looked at animal habitats. After we had identified these, we talked about the pets that all the children have. We thought about how to look after them and wrote a pet fact file. It was lovely to hear about all the pets the children have.

Outdoor learning this week has included familiarising themselves with the outdoor area through a photo scavenger hunt, creating clay faces and making a piece of artwork with natural resources and a flour handprint. As we complete our outdoor learning with class 1, please look at Mrs Pritchard's post for photos of this.

27th October 2020

The Wintringham staff team have been working hard to prepare the classrooms ready for the children starting back with us after half-term. The first five photos are where class 2 will be (currently waiting delivery of tables which will be here before the children start) and the final 5 photos are where class 1 will be. We also have plenty of space to spread out into the third classroom (in the middle) when required. We are looking forward to welcoming the children into their new school on Tuesday 3rd November. Have a lovely rest of the holiday. Love Mrs Pritchard and Miss Blyth x

W.B 19th October 2020

Class 1 and 2 enjoyed visiting their new school on Friday this week. Here are some photos from their visit. We hope you are enjoying the presents the builders have given to the children

Week Beginning 5.10.20

We have had a fantastic week in class 2. In English, the children have looked at the story, 'The Jolly Postman.' They have written some fantastic descriptions of Goldilocks and have had some good discussions as to why the Giant should or should not forgive Jack. In maths, we have explored place value and identifying how many tens and ones are in a number. We have carried out lots of practical activities and looked at how to record this as number sentences. In science, we carried out an experiment to explore how germs spread on our hands and we looked at the best way to clean them. Outdoor learning has been exciting this week. We have learnt about how seeds spread and made our very own helicopter seed.

Week Beginning 21.09.20

Class 2 have had a fabulous first couple of weeks. We are in full swing now and the children have settled back into their learning well.

The year 1 children have started looking at their book, 'How to Find Gold.' They have started to look at the characters in the story and how to describe them. In maths, the children are looking at sequencing numbers forwards and backwards.

The year 2 children have started looking at their book, 'The Jolly Postman.' They have started to look at the settings in the story and how to describe them, focussing on 2A sentences. In maths, the children are looking at place value and how numbers are made up of tens and ones.

In science, we looked at the stages a human goes through from being a baby to being elderly and the things that they are able to do at each stage.

We have started to look at our topic, 'Castles.' We have looked at the different types of castle and how they have changed over time. We have also looked at the different jobs there were in the castle.

I hope that everyone has a lovely, relaxing evening and I am looking forward to next week's learning.

In science, the children did some fantastic writing about the season of Winter. They wrote about the weather, the nature and even considered animals hibernating and migrating!

Forest School 31.01.2020

This afternoon we have been very lucky to be out at Forest School. The children started by doing a scavenger hunt. Children selected pictures out of Miss Abbott's special bag and then they had to go and find them around the field. We looked for daisies, spiderwebs and worms to name but a few. At the end of the session, the children went into the chicken pen and had a look at the chickens. They were even able to stroke one. They were very excited by this.

Maths 29.01.2020

Week Beginning 27.01.2020

In English, the children have continued to look at the book Wombat Stew. They thought about a range of adjectives to describe what they looked like, felt like and sounded like. They then used these to write their own Australian animals poems.

In maths, the children have been exploring subtracting. They have used number lines, tens frames and partitioning to support their understanding of this.

In science, we looked at umbrellas and suitable materials to fix them if they were broken. We thought about why the materials would be suitable for an umbrella.

In English the children have explored the setting of underwater. They labelled the nouns and used adjectives to describe what they could see and feel. They then wrote these up into sentences. I was very impressed with the writing they produced.
In maths, the children have been continuing to explore numbers and how to use a number line. They really enjoyed using the numicon to show numbers that are greater than or less than and drawing the symbols on the table.
In science, we have continued to explore our senses, focusing on hearing and smelling. The children smelt different pots and had to work out what was in each pot. Some of the smells were more pleasant than others!

Week Beginning 23/09/19

In English this week, the children have created their own map to navigate to find gold. They thought about adjectives to describe each section and then wrote instructions so that someone could follow the map.
In maths the children have further explored the sequencing of numbers, focusing on 1 less than 1 more than a number. The children are becoming confident in this area and are quickly recalling these.
In science, the children explored the sense of sight and touch. They played a game of I spy followed by pulling out objects from a feely bag and using adjectives to describe what they feel like.

Week Beginning 16/09/19

In English this week, the children have started looking at the story, ‘How to Find Gold.’ We read the first page and thought about the characters Anna and the crocodile. The children came up with some excellent adjectives to describe their appearance and personality and then they wrote these into sentences. Some children were even able to write a sentence with two adjectives in separated by a comma!

In maths, the children have been thinking about the sequencing of numbers. The children have looked at different representations and filled in missing numbers.

Our first science lesson took us on a exploration of the human body. We thought about our external body parts, where they are located and what they are used for. This has led us nicely to next weeks lesson where we will start to further explore our 5 senses.
