Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

PSHE Policy:

At Wintringham Primary Academy we regard PSHE and SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) as an important component of the whole curriculum. We believe that the promotion of health and well-being is central to the life of the school and it's relationship with the surrounding community.

PSHE is concerned with the total well-being of the individual. This includes: -

• Mental, emotional and physical well-being of the individual.

• The responsibility of the individual towards others and the environment. 

• A holistic model of personal and social development that encourages the development of healthy choices.

As part of PSHE, Relationships Education (RE), Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education England Regulations 2019, have made RE compulsory in all primary schools from September 2020. As RE is a statutory part of the school’s curriculum, parents may not withdraw their children from these lessons. RE teaches the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with reference to friendships, family relationships and relationships with peers and adults. This begins with children being taught about what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who the people are who can support them. RSE is a form of sex education, which focuses on exploring the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up and having relationships. Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the RSE provided at school except for those parts included in the statutory National Curriculum for Science. If parents/carers wish to withdraw their children from sex education, then they are advised to discuss this with Mrs Bryden. 

At Wintringham Primary Academy, we feel that it is the responsibility of all members of staff to promote and encourage the development of the children’s personal and social skills. As such, we have chosen to adopt a PSHE program called Jigsaw. Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, compulsory Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. It is a whole-school approach and embodies a positive philosophy and creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings as well as building their capacity to learn. Work is planned appropriately for all classes to enable children to develop both personally and socially. It deals with real life issues which affect children, their families and their communities and engages the social and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes. The promotion of high self-esteem is considered important for all children. We are also promoting and developing a Growth Mindset culture across the school, where children are confident to learn from their mistakes, develop resilience and change their mindset from "I can't do it" to "I can't do it ... yet".

Within PSHE we also recognise: -

• Health Education: This involves engaging the children in activities that promote their physical well-being.
• Citizenship: This involves encouraging the children to take a responsible role in society. It includes developing the children’s awareness of their personal safety and the process by which they can seek help and information as well as learning the behaviour expected of them as responsible citizens.
• Drugs Education: This involves educating the children in the safe handling of medicinal drugs as well as the consequences of misusing substances such as alcohol, tobacco and recreational drugs.
• British Values: ​Through assemblies and in specific PSHE lessons, we promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs (DfE Nov 2014).

How we Teach PSHE at Wintringham:

We use a range of teaching and learning styles. We place an emphasis on active learning by including the children in discussions and problem-solving activities across the curriculum. We also encourage the children to take part in a range of practical activities that promote active learning. We organise classes in such a way that all of the children are able to participate in discussions and each class sets an agreed list of classroom rules of behaviour at the beginning of each academic year.

PSHE is delivered through 6 core themes using the Jigsaw scheme of work:

1. Being Me in My World - A sense of belonging, being part of the school community, the wider community and a global community, rights and responsibilities and working and socialising with others.
2. Celebrating Difference - Diversity, accepting everyone’s right to be different and anti-bullying.
3. Dreams and Goals - Personal strengths, how to overcome challenges and experiencing and managing feelings of pride, ambition, disappointment and success.
4. Healthy Me - Emotional/mental health and physical health.
5. Relationships - Building respectful relationships with self, families, friendships and animals, online safety and social networking. 
6. Changing Me - Growing from young to old, puberty, self-respect and transition between year groups
