English and Maths

This week in English, the children have continued to read, 'Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure.' The children are very close to finishing the book! They have read chapters 18 - 19 this week and have written a diary in the role of Mr Penguin. They made sure they were using time adverbials, subordinating conjunctions and a variety of sentence starters. Towards the end of the week, the children used their knowledge of diaries to write another one in Exciting Writing. They watched a small clip from, 'The Hobbit' and wrote a diary in the role of Bilbo Baggins after being asked by Gandalf to go on an adventure!

In Maths, the children have started to look at fractions. This can be a tricky concept but the children have worked hard to understand what a fraction looks like They have used their knowledge of the whole and equal groups as well as using concrete representations to help them show different amounts. This will be in preparation for the upcoming weeks when they will start to look at fractions of quantities.

Science & Foundation Subjects

In Science, the children are close to finishing their topic, 'Food chains, teeth and the digestive system.' This week, the children looked at animal teeth and how they differ depending on where they were on the food chain. We recapped the definitions of a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore and used these to explain why an animal may have certain teeth.

In French, the children have continued to look at vegetables. They have completed a variety of speaking, reading and listening activities - the children have worked very hard to get the pronunciation spot on!

In Computing, the children been looking at and understanding networks and the internet. They have learnt about where the network comes from and how messages are sent from one router to another.

Following on from our Zoom call with scientists from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Cambridge, we were kindly leant us a microscope, where the children were taking close up photos of the environment. Here are a few of the objects that the children found and placed under the microscope. Can you identify any of them?

English & Maths

In English, the children have continued to read, ‘Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure’. This week, the children have read up to chapter 17, where it has been revealed that the people that Mr Penguin have been helping are actually the O’Hoolihan brothers in disguise. Because of this, the children wrote a discussion about whether Mr Penguin should go after them or give up and return to his igloo.

In Maths, the children have started to identify the relationships between the 2-, 4- and 8-times tables. The children started to count in multiples of 4 and looking at how the 2 and the 4 times table are linked. They were able to use the correct language and explain the different relationships. Also, they have looked at the perimeter of 2D shapes and the year 4 children have worked on understanding decimals.

Science & Foundation Subjects

In Science, the children were lucky enough to have a Zoom call with scientists from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Cambridge. They spoke about their jobs and how they used microscopes. The company kindly leant us a microscope, where the children were taking close up photos of the environment.

In Geography, the children have continued with their fieldwork. This week, they looked at sketch maps and identified what is included in one. To begin with, the children were able to identify the human and physical resources on a map, explaining the difference between the two. After, they then had a go at drawing their own maps and drew a key to show what they had drawn.

As well as this, the children have been introduced to 3 new characters and they have written a character description about each one.

In Maths, the children have continued with addition and subtraction. This week, we have been subtracting 2 - digit numbers from a 3 - digit number with exchanging. The children used practical resources to help them as this can be a tricky concept to understand. However, the children were fantastic and they did a super job.

Science and Foundation Subjects

In Science, the children have started their new topic, 'Food chains, the digestive system and teeth'. So far the children have been ordering the process of digestion and labelling the key organs that are used during this process.

In Music, the children have been looking at singing and performing a Viking song. They started by using musical instruments and beats to understand pitch and tempo. Once they understood this, the children were given the lyrics of the song. They had to listen to it first before singing it themselves. In lesson 2, the children practiced the song more before starting to add actions to it.

Have a good weekend.

We are at the point of the journey where the pebble has seen a T – Rex and some other dinosaurs having a disagreement near a river. The children have written a discussion text about whether the T – Rex or the other dinosaurs should be allowed to use the river. They focused on using subordinating conjunctions and adverbials of addition to add extra information to their writing.

In Maths, the children have continued to look at addition and subtraction. This week, the children have looked at the inverse and using this to check their calculations. Using counters and part – whole models, the children were able to get to the correct addition calculation and use the subtraction number sentence to check the answer. To finish, they the children were able to answer reasoning and problem-solving activities.

Science & Foundation Subjects

In Science, the children have started their new topic, ‘Rocks’. For the first lesson, the children looked at the three different types of rocks, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. After this, the children looked at different rocks that came under each of categories, identifying the properties of each rock. In their second lesson, the children conducted an experiment and tested whether rocks are permeable or impermeable. The children worked in groups to determine which rocks allowed water to pass through them.

In Computing, the children have continued to work on the application, Scratch. They have started to create their own animations as well as editing small projects to make them better.

Friday 18th November 2022
