"Science is not a subject you took in school. It's life. We are wrapped by it, in it, with it"
Neil deDrasse Tyson (American Astrophysicist)
"The important thing is to never stop questioning."
Albert Einstein (Theoretical physicist)
National Curriculum
The National Curriculum specifies the Science content that should be taught and can be found at:
How we teach Science at Wintringham
A good understanding of Science allows children to interact with the world around them with a fundamental knowledge of physics, biology and chemistry. At Wintringham, we aim to provide children with the necessary skills and understanding to both collaboratively and independently engage with key scientific concepts whilst developing the ability to ‘Work Scientifically’. This will allow them to question, justify and experiment with ideas through a range of methods, such as discussions, examples and, most importantly, experimenting!
Each year group follows a set group of units as set out in the National Curriculum. Within these, children will be challenged with a range of scientific skills that are built upon and developed as they progress year-by-year.
Assessment
The children undertake a range of experiments and scientific enquiries in order to demonstrate their progress against curriculum objectives. This is then assessed by the class teacher to track progress, using a specific pro forma for the children to use in order to exhibit their understanding of the topic, using a range of scientific skills.
Alongside this, the children are regularly quizzed in a fun and interactive manner to ensure that topic content has been understood, using online platforms such as Plickers to chart progress. Alongside this, end of unit quizzes, with questions based on National Curriculum objectives, are taken to track progress and ensure learning progresses.
